Cuomo Considers Independent NYC Mayoral Bid After Primary Defeat

Former New York Gov.andrew Cuomo is contemplating an independent run for New York City mayor after losing the Democratic primary to Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. Despite securing 36.4% of the vote compared to Mamdani’s 43.5% in unofficial results, Cuomo has yet to decide on a full-scale campaign.
Cuomo told CBS News that he would assess the primary results and the general election landscape before making a final decision. He specifically mentioned concerns about the feasibility of Mamdani’s proposals for free services, questioning their realism.
A recent poll indicated that Mamdani could win the general election against current Mayor Eric Adams. However, the same poll showed a tie between Mamdani and Cuomo if the former governor enters the race as an independent. in that scenario, Adams is projected to receive only 13% of the vote.
Adams characterized the election as a choice “between a candidate with a blue collar” and one with a “silver spoon,” further stating, “A choice between dirty fingernails and manicured nails.”
Some Cuomo allies and donors are hesitant about another run.Real estate firm Newmark Group Chairman Emeritus Jeff Gural suggested supporting Mamdani or trying to “resurrect Eric.” Other allies reportedly believe a general election campaign would be pointless if Cuomo repeats what one described as an “astonishingly incompetent” primary strategy.
Cuomo told the *Times* that increased public appearances would not have altered the primary outcome. He also expressed regret for resigning in 2021 following sexual harassment allegations, for which he apologized for making his accusers “feel uncomfortable.”
Following Tuesday’s loss, hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, who donated $500,000 to a Cuomo super PAC, called for a new candidate to challenge Mamdani. Ackman criticized Cuomo for running a passive campaign based on name recognition and early polling data.
Cuomo spokesman rich Azzopardi stated they where proud of the campaign and the coalition built, noting they met turnout goals and secured more votes than Adams did four years ago. He added that Mamdani expanded the electorate in a way that models and polls failed to capture. Azzopardi said they are weighing their options for next steps.
