According to archives from the Press & Dakotan, the incident began when a South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper stopped Adams for making an illegal U-turn. Following the stop, Adams led the trooper on a pursuit that covered 20 miles.
During the chase, Adams displayed a firearm. After his vehicle was stopped, he fired a volley of shots at the patrolman, who returned fire. Adams sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire.
In November 2018, Adams entered a no-contest plea for the charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. In January 2019, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison.
