The functional recovery and rehabilitation unit at the Cutroni Zodda
hospital in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto officially resumes inpatient admissions on Monday at 1:00 p.m. Dr. Antonino Mario Genovese, the medical director delegate of the hospital’s sanitary function, announced the reopening in a formal notice.
Reopening of the Cutroni Zodda Rehabilitation Unit
The department reopens following a long suspension that began after what Dr. Giuseppe Quattrocchi described as an abrupt and unwanted closure during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Quattrocchi will direct the revived unit, which is integrated into the Metropolitan Area’s Complex Operating Unit for Adult and Minor Rehabilitation.
Initial capacity stands at four beds, with one bed specifically reserved for developmental age and premature pathology cases. Dr. Quattrocchi stated that the bed count will soon expand to 12 before reaching the planned total of 24 beds.
Expansion of Advanced Diagnostic and Therapeutic Services
Alongside standard inpatient admissions starting Oct. 26, the department launches a prevention and treatment service for capsular pathologies using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) through intra- and periarticular platelet paste inoculations. The facility also anticipates the reinstatement of botulinum toxin injections for managing spasticity and dystonia.
Dr. Genovese highlighted the importance of the launch in the official notice. This initiative represents a significant milestone in the progressive growth of the Hospital, demonstrating the constant commitment to strengthening the healthcare offering, developing services and improving the quality of care for the benefit of the community and the local area.
he declared.
After years of sudden, inappropriate, and unwelcome closure of the existing department due to the COVID pandemic, the hospital’s neurological, orthopedic, and cognitive-functional rehabilitation and re-education department has reopened, with emotional participation from all the residents of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto and all the municipalities in the District.
Staff Preparation and Community Integration
Dr. Quattrocchi credited the perseverance of a multidisciplinary team including physiotherapists, speech therapists, neuro-psychomotricity therapists, occupational therapists, movement animators, a psychologist, physicians, nurses, and healthcare assistants. He also expressed gratitude to Asp Messina general director Dr. CuccĂ, administrative director Dr. Niutta, and sanitary director Dr. Trimarchi for addressing his requests to restart the service.
During the Oct. 26 inauguration, local artist Carmelo Biondo will present a canvas painting reflecting the colors, history, and culture of the local area, which Dr. Quattrocchi will make accessible to patients and visitors.
