Mona Mitterwallner, the reigning two-time world champion in mountain bike marathon, is shifting gears. The 22-year-old Austrian athlete has signed with Human Powered Health Cycling, a U.S.-based team, and is ready to conquer the world of road cycling.“I’m very excited,” Mitterwallner said. “I’ve always said I wanted to try road cycling, and now the chance has presented itself. The timing is right.”
Mitterwallner, who will be teammates with fellow Austrian Kathrin Schweinberger, plans to compete in both mountain biking and road cycling. With the next Olympic Games four years away, she sees this as the perfect time to explore new horizons.
“You’ll still see me on the mountain bike, and I’ll be at all the World Cups,” mitterwallner explained. “But I’ll have to miss the European Championships. We have some really cool road races planned.
