Australian rider Maeve Plouffe stated that she narrowly avoided a collision with a public vehicle during the opening stage of the Tour of Britain Women in Cumbria, according to reporting from the BBC. The incident occurred on a roundabout while Plouffe was attempting to rejoin the main peloton following a puncture on Wednesday. The 27-year-old cyclist, who competes for the British continental team O’Shea Red Chilli Bikes, shared her account in a social media post detailing the encounter during the stage that began and ended in Cockermouth. According to Plouffe’s published statement, vehicles from the general public approached from multiple directions while the race convoy remained visible ahead. She wrote on Instagram that she was less than two minutes down when a car nearly struck her on a roundabout. She added that subsequent support from the moto escort provided a significantly safer environment for the remainder of the stage.

Safety Concerns Amid Recent Professional Cycling Tragedies

Plouffe connected the near-miss incident directly to recent safety discussions within the professional cycling community. Her comments followed the death of 19-year-old British rider Finlay Tarling, who was killed the previous week during the eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal after a high-speed collision with a van that had entered the active roadway. Organisers of the Tour of Britain Women acknowledged Tarling prior to the start of the race. All 114 participating riders and spectators observed a minute of applause, accompanied by a photograph of Tarling projected onto a large screen at the venue. Finlay Tarling was the younger brother of Netcompany Inoes rider Josh Tarling, who was named to his team’s lineup for the Vuelta a Espana starting on Saturday.

Jonathan Day, events director for British Cycling Ventures, addressed the incident in an official statement provided to the BBC. Day confirmed that event organisers are treating Plouffe’s report with high priority. “We note Maeve Plouffe’s comments about her experience during yesterday’s race, and we’re taking these extremely seriously,” Day stated, according to the BBC. “Rider safety is paramount and will always be treated as a priority in our planning and how we operate any race.” Day also noted that event officials are actively reviewing the circumstances of the incident in direct consultation with Plouffe and her team, O’Shea Red Chilli Bikes. He acknowledged the sensitive timing of the event following the recent fatality in Portugal, emphasising the organisation’s commitment to rider and team security during the race. Meanwhile, the Tour of Britain Women continued with subsequent stages. Lorena Wiebes of the Netherlands maintained the leader’s green jersey following a victory on the second stage in Lancashire.
