Cycling World Mourns Loss of Former Giro d’Italia Leader Pascal Hervé
Pascal Hervé, the French cyclist who famously donned the iconic pink jersey at the 1996 Giro d’Italia, has died at the age of 60. The news, announced by the French cyclists’ union (Uncp),sent shockwaves through the cycling community, though details surrounding his passing were not instantly released.
Hervé had revealed in September 2024 that he underwent surgery earlier that year for a stomach tumor.
“Pascal was an emblematic figure and an essential voice in our sport,” the Uncp wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. “The big cycling family is in mourning.”
Tributes poured in from former teammates and cycling enthusiasts alike. Laurent Brochard, the 1997 world champion who raced alongside hervé at festina, expressed his grief on social media.
“Pascal,my friend,I am devastated,” Brochard wrote. “You left on Christmas night,my friend, you were so rock ‘n’ roll until the end… I have so many memories, so many great moments, we had so many plans for the future… I have no words. You were always there, always a word, even in difficult times. I love you and I hug you, my friend, we will see each other again, I will miss you.”
Hervé, a former amateur world champion, retired from professional cycling at 37 after testing positive for a banned substance at the 2001 Giro d’Italia. Three years prior, he was suspended for two months for his involvement in the Festina doping scandal during the 1998 Tour de France, where he was a loyal domestique for Richard Virenque.
Hervé’s career was a complex tapestry of triumphs and controversies. While his talent and fighting spirit on the bike were undeniable, his involvement in doping scandals cast a shadow over his legacy. Nevertheless, his impact on the cycling world is undeniable, and his passing leaves a void in the hearts of many.
The Legacy of Pascal Hervé: A Conversation
Maya: Did you hear about Pascal Hervé? The cyclist?
David: No, what happened?
Maya: He passed away. He was only 60.
David: Wow,that’s really young. What was the cause?
Maya: I read that he had surgery for a stomach tumor earlier this year, back in September. The French cyclists’ union announced his death, but they didn’t say anything more specific.
David: I remember him! He wore the pink jersey at the giro d’Italia back in ‘96, right?
Maya: That’s right! He was a great rider, even became the amateur world champion once.
David: I also remember he got caught up in some doping scandals, right?
Maya: Yeah, unluckily. He tested positive at the 2001 Giro and was suspended for two months in ’98 as of the Festina affair.
David: It’s sad because you can see how talented he was,but those controversies definitely overshadowed his career.
Maya: Exactly. there are a lot of tributes online from other cyclists tho. Laurent brochard, who was on the same team as him, seems really heartbroken. He posted this really touching message on social media.
David: It sounds like he was a well-respected figure in the cycling world, even with everything that happened.
Maya: Definitely. He was a complex character, but obviously a cyclist many admired.
David: It’s always tragic to lose someone so young.
