Severe Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, a Category 3 system, has caused widespread travel chaos, infrastructure damage, and flooding across Fiji, leaving numerous international tourists stranded and disrupting essential services.
The storm’s impact has been most acute at Nadi International Airport, the primary gateway for visitors from Australia, New Zealand, North America, and Asia. The timing of the cyclone coincided with an early-April holiday period, which had brought a new wave of leisure travelers to the archipelago.
Aviation Disruptions and Diverted Flights
Aviation operations across Fiji have been severely crippled. Domestic carrier Fiji Link cancelled all flights due to intense rain, strong winds, and low visibility affecting major routes, including the Nadi and Suva corridors.
International services faced similar disruptions. On April 7, 2026, flights to and from Nadi operated by Qantas, Jetstar, and Virgin Australia were cancelled. Air New Zealand also cancelled flights NZ952 and NZ953, while flight ON017 was delayed.
The severity of the weather led to dangerous conditions for aircraft attempting to land. A flight from Sydney to Fiji was diverted after three attempted landings. Passengers on that flight reported that some people were spewing in the aisles
during the ordeal.
Airlines repositioned larger aircraft out of the cyclone’s projected impact zone to avoid tarmac damage and turbulence. Operators have been assessing runway conditions, power reliability, and navigation systems before resuming services.
Impact on Tourism and Local Infrastructure
The cyclone has dealt a significant blow to Fiji’s tourism-dependent economy. Many Australian tourists have been stranded, with some hunkering down in darkened resorts and others waiting in hotels near Nadi for information on flight resumptions.

Beyond the airports, the storm has caused severe ground-level devastation. Massive floods have destroyed homes and forced the closure of schools. The Ministry has announced partial school closures in response to the weather conditions.
Flood warnings remain in effect for the Nadi and Tuva rivers as the system moves south of Fiji. Residents and visitors have been advised to shelter in resort areas or hotels until conditions ease.
Regional Weather Context
The disruptions in Fiji are part of a broader pattern of volatility in the Pacific. While Cyclone Vaianu battered Fiji, Cyclone Maila reached Category 4 status, further contributing to the general disruption of travel across the Pacific region.
Passengers are currently facing rolling delays and limited rebooking options as airlines attempt to manage the backlog of stranded travelers. Authorities continue to urge the public to avoid unnecessary travel due to hazardous sea and weather conditions.
