Cynthia Erivo, the star of Wicked, supports fans singing along during movie screenings. In an interview with Today hosts Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, and Savannah Guthrie at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, she stated, “Good! I’m OK with it. We spent this long singing it ourselves; it’s time for everyone else to join in.”
Erivo plays Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s film adaptation, which is performing well at the box office. However, some theater managers have raised concerns about audience singing, leading to an online debate about behavior in theaters.
Ryan Noonan from AMC Theatres mentioned that the company discourages singing to maintain a good experience for all viewers. He explained that AMC has a policy against disruptive behavior and emphasizes this in their preshow announcement.
Erivo expressed her joy in being part of the film, saying it’s a wonderful experience to share with everyone. During the broadcast, she honored Kotb, who will leave Today in January, by presenting her with flowers. She thanked Kotb for her many years of hard work, celebrating her departure in a heartfelt moment.
