Czech Television has announced plans for a third season of its popular crime series, Docent, promising a continuation of the compelling cases and familiar faces that have captivated audiences over the past two years. The series, which has garnered a dedicated fanbase, is currently in development with a scheduled release for 2026.
The ambition behind the new season is high, with potential for Docent to establish itself as one of the leading crime dramas in recent years. The series follows Doc. Otto Stehlík, an academic and specialist in criminal psychological profiling, as he navigates the complexities of the Prague murder squad.
Drawing Inspiration from Real-World Cases
The core cast is set to return, a crucial element given the series’ reliance on strong performances. Ivan Trojan will reprise his role as Docent Otto Stehlík, alongside Ondřej Vetchý as the head of the murder party, and Tereza Ramba as Captain Monika Fousová. Jiří Strach is once again directing, while Josef Mareš is the sole writer for the upcoming season.
Mareš brings significant credentials to the project, having previously written the highly successful series Devadesátky and co-writing Případy 1. Oddělení, considered by many to be one of the best crime series in recent Czech television history. The series continues to draw inspiration from real-world criminal investigations, though it doesn’t strictly adhere to specific historical cases, maintaining a sense of authenticity.
“The cases are based on my experience, but it’s more about inspiration than a precise copy of how things actually happened. I like to draw on what I experienced at work when writing, because it makes it more authentic and, I dare say, more interesting,” Mareš stated.
A New Approach to Investigation
While firmly rooted in the crime genre, Docent distinguishes itself from more action-oriented dramas. The focus remains on the meticulous detective work of the investigators, now incorporating a new colleague specializing in psychology. This shift introduces a different approach to solving murders, moving beyond traditional methods.
The investigation process now prioritizes understanding the underlying causes, identifying behavioral patterns, and deciphering the perpetrator’s thought processes. While initially met with skepticism from seasoned detectives, this psychological approach proves to be effective. The series draws parallels to international crime dramas such as Mindhunter and Criminal Minds, which have resonated with audiences.
Demanding Scenes and Expanding Locations
The production team has opted to film outside of Prague and studio settings, offering greater flexibility in terms of storytelling. The actors will face challenging scenes, including underwater sequences and complex car chases. One storyline will center around a case involving missing persons, with significant developments unfolding within a single hour. Tereza Ramba’s character, Captain Fousová, will also be given a more prominent role, leveraging her connections abroad to drive the plot forward and explore her personal development.
Anticipated Release and Audience Expectations
The new season is slated for release in the fall of 2026, and Czech Television is optimistic about its success, potentially surpassing the viewership of the previous two seasons. The first season averaged 1.5 million viewers, and the network is hoping to break the two million mark with the third installment. The second season has received high ratings from viewers, who have praised its quality.
Docent stands as another example of a series that has not only resonated with audiences but also established itself as a high-quality, successful Czech television production. If the third season maintains the standards of its predecessors – and potentially exceeds them – it has the potential to solidify its position as one of the best crime dramas currently offered by Czech television.
