The survey found that 24% of respondents saeid hockey is one of their favorite sports and they watch it whenever possible.
Football received the same answer from only 16% of respondents. When including viewers who “usually miss out” on watching sports, the difference becomes more pronounced: 43% for hockey compared to 31% for football.
The Sport Marketing Research survey, conducted last November, polled a representative sample of 3,000 respondents. The survey is repeated every three years to monitor trends in popularity. While interest in football and hockey is reportedly growing, biathlon has seen a decline, possibly due to the performance of Czech representatives.
Hockey dominates in viewership of sporting events, with 44% of respondents actively following the World Championship, and three-quarters watching at least selected matches. The Winter and Summer Olympics follow, then football championships.
In the case of important sports events, athletics and downhill skiing have a large intervention,
the survey stated.
Over 30% of respondents follow at least part of the Tour de France cycling race and Formula one races.
Popular Czech Athletes
The survey also assessed the popularity of Czech athletes, with 94 individuals evaluated on a scale of zero (I do not know) to 10 (I am a realy big fan). David Pastrňák is the most popular, likely influenced by the Golden Hockey Championship in Prague, experiencing the most significant increase in popularity since 2021.
Following Pastrňák are other winter sports athletes: speed skater martina Sáblíková, hockey player Jaromír Jágr, snowboarder and skier Ester Ledecká, and snowboarder Eva Adamczyková.
Several former athletes also appeared in the top 10, including javelin thrower Barbora Špotáková, Petr Čech (football), and Jakub Voráček (hockey). Tomáš Souček is the most popular active football player, ranking in the fifth ten.

The survey also examined children’s sports and adult sports activities.Most respondents prefer cycling, followed by swimming, hiking, and running. Cycling is the top choice for men, while swimming leads among women.
Nikola Ogrodníková, a javelin bronze medalist from the Olympics in Paris, and tennis player Karolína muchová, also saw significant increases in popularity compared to 2021. petra Kvitová and Kateřina Siniaková are the most popular tennis representatives.
