District Attorney Angel Myers McIlrath addressed the investigation in a social media statement, emphasizing that authorities must protect the integrity of the case despite public pressure. According to ABC News, McIlrath stated that officials understand the community wants answers regarding the death of the Mississippi teenager, but investigators must complete a thorough review of all available evidence.

Our community is grieving the loss of Nolan Wells, McIlrath wrote, as reported by ABC News. Nolan’s family deserves answers and our community deserves answers.

McIlrath maintained that the case follows the standard grand jury process used for all death investigations in the jurisdiction. According to ABC News, she stressed that investigators are not delaying the process intentionally, but are taking the time necessary to analyze every witness interview, examine every piece of evidence, and follow every credible lead.

Family Retains Civil Rights Attorney Ben Crump

Nolan Wells went missing on July 4, 2026, after taking a boat trip with friends to Horn Island, Mississippi, according to local authorities. Officials stated that Wells stayed behind on the island after his friends departed. His body was recovered two days later on July 6, 2026, with investigators initially suspecting drowning and noting no early indication of a crime, according to ABC News and Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter.

Seeking an independent review, the family retained prominent civil rights attorney Ben Crump. According to the New York Post, Crump arranged for Wells’ body to be flown more than 800 miles to Washington, D.C., for an independent autopsy. A preliminary independent autopsy report found the cause and manner of death to be undetermined pending further investigation, citing multiple limitations in the report, according to ABC News.

Concerns Over Deleted Messages and Witness Discrepancies

Attorney Ben Crump raised concerns regarding the teenager’s mobile phone after the family regained possession of the device. According to the New York Post, Crump stated that the family discovered deleted messages on the phone, adding to what he described as a series of contradictions in the case.

That’s not adding up to them, Crump told ABC News, as cited by the New York Post, referring to the family’s scrutiny of the device and conflicting accounts from individuals who were on the island.

Investigators are examining differing accounts of the teen’s final hours. According to the New York Post, friends who were on the trip stated that Wells wanted to stay on Horn Island and was last seen talking to a woman. That woman told representatives that Wells stated he was going back to the boat, creating a conflict with the accounts provided by the male friends on the vessel, according to Crump’s statements reported by the New York Post.

Additionally, attorneys and family members pointed to online videos circulating on social media that allegedly show an argument involving Wells on a boat, questioning why authorities stated no foul play is suspected, according to the New York Post. Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter previously urged anyone who observed or heard an argument, disturbance, or unusual activity on the island that day to contact law enforcement.
