Sydney’s newest pizzeria, L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, is drawing comparisons to its famed Neapolitan progenitor – and attracting queues – despite a somewhat manufactured atmosphere, according to a recent review. The restaurant, which opened in December at the north end of Sydney’s central business district, offers a surprisingly affordable entry point to the globally recognized brand, with standard margherita pizzas priced at $18.

The original Da Michele was established in Naples in 1906 and gained international recognition following a brief appearance in the 2010 film Eat Pray Love. The scene, lasting less than two minutes, proved sufficient “tinder” for the company’s expansion, now encompassing 80 locations across cities including Milan, London, Tokyo and Dubai, with Saudi Arabia boasting four franchises.

While the Sydney location attempts to replicate the dolce vita aesthetic, the reviewer noted a somewhat artificial quality to the ambiance, including a lingering Christmas tree in mid-January and portraits of Julia Roberts adorning the walls. However, the core product – the pizza – largely delivers. The reviewer found the pizzas comparable to other Neapolitan-style offerings available in Sydney, praising the thin, floppy bases and tangy tomato sauce.

The menu extends beyond the four traditional pizzas offered at the Naples flagship, with options like diavola, vesuvio, and salsiccia e friarielli. While some additions, such as the spicy salami on the diavola, were described as underwhelming, the salsiccia and friarielli pizza, topped with pork sausage, received a positive assessment. Other menu items, including pasta dishes like paccheri alla Genovese and lasagne, received mixed reviews, with the paccheri praised for its flavour and the lasagne criticized for its overly soft texture.

The restaurant’s pricing structure was highlighted as a significant draw, with the reviewer describing the $18 margherita as “ripper value” in 2026. Upgrading to a “doppia” margherita, featuring a double portion of mozzarella, costs $22. Wine is available at $12 per glass.

Service was described as efficient and largely Italian, though a minor incident involving a recycling bin colliding with a patron’s stool went unacknowledged by staff. The review noted that the restaurant does not allow customers to pay for reviews or secure inclusion in restaurant guides, ensuring editorial independence.

The assessment concludes that while L’Antica Pizzeria Da Michele in Sydney may not fully replicate the experience of the original Naples location, it offers a worthwhile dining experience, particularly given its accessible price point. The restaurant’s success will likely depend on maintaining quality and service as it navigates the competitive Sydney dining scene.
