A father’s dietary habits during his teenage years can significantly impact his children’s fruit and vegetable consumption, according to a new study. The research emphasizes the long-term influence of adolescent eating habits on future parenting and family nutrition.
The study, presented by Mariane H. De Oliveira, ph.D., at NUTRITION 2025, analyzed data from 669 men who answered questionnaires about their adolescent eating habits and later provided facts about their children’s diets.De Oliveira is a postdoctoral researcher at Boston College.
The findings suggest that fathers who maintained a healthier diet as teenagers were more likely to encourage positive food habits in their children. these fathers demonstrated better modeling of healthy eating and were more proactive in monitoring their child’s intake of unhealthy foods, such as sweets and snacks, promoting healthy eating habits.
The participants were part of the “Fathers & Family” cohort, a sub-study of the Growing Up Today Study. They completed dietary questionnaires during adolescence and had children between 1 and 6 years old during a follow-up study in 2021-2022.

The study categorized participants’ adolescent diets as poor, declining, or improving. Results indicated that men whose diet quality improved during adolescence were significantly more likely to model healthy eating and monitor their children’s eating habits compared to those wiht poor adolescent diets.Children of fathers with improved adolescent diet quality were also more likely to meet recommended fruit and vegetable consumption guidelines, contributing to better childhood nutrition.
De Oliveira emphasized the importance of encouraging healthy eating in young people, stating, “Healthy eating habits formed during adolescence not only benefit individuals but also shape future parenting behaviors, contributing to better nutrition for the next generation.” She added that this is particularly critically important given concerns about childhood obesity and poor dietary habits, suggesting that investing in adolescent nutrition can yield lasting, intergenerational benefits for healthy eating.

The researchers acknowledged that the study population was primarily white and well-educated, which may limit the generalizability of the findings. The study also noted that while family meals during adolescence did not appear to contribute to healthier dietary patterns later in life, the potential role of mothers’ eating behaviors was not evaluated.
