Daejeon’s New Dongdaejeon library Opens, Promising Cultural Enrichment
DAEJEON, South Korea (May 1, 2025) – The city of Daejeon celebrated the grand opening of the Dongdaejeon Library today, marking a notable addition to the eastern region’s cultural landscape. The library aims to serve as a hub for knowledge and diverse cultural experiences for residents.
Grand Opening Attracts Hundreds
The opening ceremony, held earlier today, drew a crowd of over 400 attendees, including Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, city council members, and enthusiastic citizens. Families and local residents filled the library, demonstrating considerable interest in the new facility.

Opening Day Programs a Success
Special programs were organized to commemorate the library’s launch, with notably strong interest in a lecture by author Kim Young-ha, known for works such as “The Murderer’s Memory.” Citizens actively participated in the session, engaging in discussions about books and life.
A “Library Taste Day” event also allowed visitors to explore the library’s various spaces and learn about its functions, providing an interactive introduction to the facility’s offerings.
A Library Designed for All Ages
The Dongdaejeon Library features a three-story building with one basement level, designed with distinct areas catering to different age groups and interests. Functionally oriented spaces include a children’s workshop, a youth creative room, a creative experience area, and a general reference section, ensuring convenient use for citizens of all backgrounds.
‘Light of Light’: A Symbolic Space
The library also boasts a unique space called “Light of Light,” designed to reflect the meaning of the Chinese characters in the Gayang region name. Officials anticipate this area will become a symbolic landmark within the library.
Mayor’s Vision for the Library
“The Dongdaejeon Library will go beyond a simple reading space and become a cultural base that stimulates the creativity and emotion of citizens,” said Mayor lee Jang-woo. He added, “We hope it will develop into an open space where knowledge and culture come together.”
Operating Hours and Programs
The dongdaejeon Library will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except on Fridays and public holidays. A variety of programs designed to enhance local residents’ reading habits and cultural engagement will be offered regularly.

Serving the districts of Daejeon Dong-gu and Daedeok-gu, the library is expected to play a crucial role in promoting balanced regional development and expanding access to cultural opportunities for residents.
