Dáil Backs Bord Bia Chair Larry Murrin Amid Beef Sourcing Row

Dáil Backs Bord Bia Chair Larry Murrin Amid Brazil Beef Controversy

The Dáil has voted to express support for Larry Murrin, chairman of Bord Bia, following a motion proposed by Sinn Féin calling for his removal. The motion stemmed from revelations that Mr. Murrin’s company, Dawn Farm Foods, sourced approximately 1% of its beef from Brazil last year.

Yesterday, February 11th, 2026, the Government opposed Sinn Féin’s motion and successfully amended it to demonstrate support for Mr. Murrin. The amended motion passed with 88 votes in favour and 61 against, according to reports from RTÉ.

The vote comes as members of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) continue to protest at Bord Bia headquarters on Pembroke Road in Dublin, demanding Mr. Murrin’s resignation. Farming groups, including the IFA, the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers Association (ICSA), and the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA), argue that Mr. Murrin’s position creates a conflict of interest, given Bord Bia’s role in promoting Irish food products.

Tánaiste Simon Harris defended Mr. Murrin in the Dáil, accusing Sinn Féin of pursuing a politically motivated outcome. “This is not about food on the table, it is about a head on a plate,” Mr. Harris stated, signaling the Government’s firm stance against removing the Bord Bia chair.

Dawn Farms has stated that Brazilian beef accounted for less than 1% of its total beef supply in the previous year. Despite this, concerns remain regarding the potential impact on the reputation of Irish beef and the integrity of Bord Bia’s promotional efforts.

Mr. Murrin recently appeared before an Oireachtas Agriculture Committee, where he reaffirmed his commitment to his role at Bord Bia. He told the committee he remains ‘fully committed’ to Bord Bia role, despite the ongoing scrutiny.

The controversy has sparked a wider debate about the sourcing of beef and the potential for conflicts of interest within semi-state agencies. Analysts have questioned who will blink first in the Larry Murrin-Bord Bia row, suggesting the situation remains volatile.

Further pressure on Mr. Murrin is mounting, with reports indicating that two county councils have backed motions calling for his removal. Mr. Murrin has defended his position, citing “global market realities” and compliance with EU regulations, according to the Irish Examiner.
