Daily life stress can trigger structural heart changes that increase health risks through low-level inflammation, according to a British study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology. Over time, this inflammatory response alters the physical structure of the heart, raising the likelihood of severe medical issues such as myocardial infarction and stroke.

Analysis of 500,000 British Study Participants

Researchers examined roughly 500,000 participants in a vast British study, analyzing cardiac examinations, blood markers linked to inflammation, genetic information, and body fat percentages. The team also evaluated nearly 200 environmental exposures, including socioeconomic status, smoking habits, sedentary behavior, household size, loneliness levels, anxiety, sleep patterns, diet, financial difficulties, divorce, and air pollution exposure.

Chronic Stress Could Drive Hidden Inflammation Linked to Heart Damage: Study

In practical terms, higher chronic inflammation correlates with smaller heart chambers, thicker walls, and less blood pumped during each heartbeat.

Link Between Inflammation and Increased Heart Attack Risks

Researchers also confirmed that elevated inflammation levels correspond to a heightened risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The study established a direct association between higher bodily inflammation and indicators of socioeconomic precarity and psychological distress. While smoking and central adiposity emerged as the strongest determinants for increased inflammation, researchers highlighted psychological distress as a very strong factor. According to Dr. Iglesies-Grau, the findings broaden traditional cardiovascular prevention by integrating psychological health and socioeconomic determinants into the medical framework.

Inflammatory Proteins Could Serve as Therapeutic Targets

While the study demonstrates an association rather than direct causality, the observed structural changes are plausibly driven by the inflammation caused by daily stress. Researchers specifically identified inflammatory proteins that could eventually serve as targets for new therapeutic medications.
