Only 20% of U.S. men know that research has linked dairy consumption to an increased risk of prostate cancer, according to a national survey conducted by Morning Consult for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). Released on September 13, 2026, during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the poll of 1,102 men also found that 66% would consider avoiding dairy products after learning about the reported connection.
Survey Reveals Low Awareness and High Support for Dairy Warnings
The findings highlight a distinct gap between nutritional science and public awareness. According to the survey data, only 20% of respondents reported that a healthcare professional had ever discussed how nutrition might influence their prostate cancer risk.
Noah Praamsma, a registered dietitian and nutrition education coordinator with the PCRM, stated in the survey release, Physicians and other healthcare professionals need more education on the dangers of dairy products and the benefits of a plant-based diet for prostate cancer.
Following the survey, 76% of participants expressed support for placing warning labels on dairy products to alert consumers to the possible prostate cancer risk.
What Observational Studies Say About Dairy Intake
Evidence linking dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt to prostate cancer is derived largely from observational research. A meta-analysis combining 32 studies associated higher consumption of dairy products with a greater risk of developing the disease. Individual studies have noted specific patterns related to milk consumption. Over an eight- to 10-year span, a different analysis following 3,612 men discovered that those who ingested about three portions of low-fat dairy every day faced greater than twice the likelihood of developing prostate cancer compared to individuals consuming under one serving daily. Research also suggests potential risks extending past a diagnosis. A meta-analysis of 11 studies covering more than 700,000 participants examined cancer mortality alongside dairy intake. Among individuals tracked, those consuming the greatest amounts of whole milk faced up to a 50% higher mortality risk from prostate cancer relative to those with the lowest intake levels. Public health researchers emphasize that these observational studies show an association rather than direct causation.
Potential Benefits of Plant-Based Diets
In contrast to the findings on dairy, studies have associated plant-based diets with substantially lower risks. Data from the Adventist Health Study-2 indicated that men following a vegan diet had a 35% lower risk of prostate cancer than men following nonvegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, or semi-vegetarian diets.
Plant-based eating habits have also shown potential benefits for patients already diagnosed with the disease. In a study of more than 2,000 men with prostate cancer, those consuming the largest amounts of plant-based foods experienced a 56% lower risk of disease progression and a 59% lower risk of recurrence compared to those eating the smallest amounts.
Experts caution that these findings do not establish a guarantee that adopting a vegan or plant-based diet will prevent prostate cancer or stop an existing tumor from advancing. Dietary choices are intended to complement, rather than replace, regular medical screenings and professional care.
Prostate Cancer Burden in the United States
Based on the 2024 annual report published by the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed malignancy among American men and ranks as the second leading cause of cancer mortality within this population. The American Cancer Society estimated 333,830 new cases for the year. Because tumors can range from slow-growing conditions to aggressive forms capable of spreading, early detection remains critical.
