The 43-year-old rider, representing the Slovnaft Rally Team, sustained a right shoulder injury approximately 140 kilometers into the 736-kilometer stage – a grueling stretch comprised of 422 kilometers of timed special section.
A Veteran of the Dakar
This marks Svitek’s fifth retirement in 17 Dakar Rally appearances. Notably, this was his first experiance competing in Saudi Arabia, which has hosted the rally as 2020 after relocating from Africa. Despite the setback,Svitek boasts a strong Dakar pedigree,having achieved a career-best second-place finish in 2016. He is a consistent contender for the title of best private driver – a prestigious recognition awarded to the highest-placed competitor not affiliated with a factory team.
Strong Start Before the Incident
prior to the accident, Svitek was performing admirably, holding 12th position overall after the second stage.He trailed the leading Australian rider, Daniel Sanders, by just over 24 minutes. The incident forced Svitek to request medical attention and evacuation back to the base camp, effectively ending his participation in the 2024 event.
