Dale Vince To Rescue London Local News Group
Green energy entrepreneur and Labour donor Dale Vince is planning to launch a London-wide news operation as part of a proposed rescue package for the loss-making group behind the Camden New Journal, Islington Tribune, and Westminster Extra. Vince stated he would invest whatever financial backing is necessary to support the publications and combat what he views as a rightwing bias in the UK media.
Proposed Rescue Package and Digital Expansion
Vince confirmed he is already examining options to expand the Westminster edition to cover city-wide issues across London. The investment aims to place the Camden New Journal group on a stronger financial foundation and transition the print-heavy titles into properly digital operations.
While the rescue package has not yet been formally finalised, Vince described his motivation as driven by the societal impact of local journalism rather than commercial returns. The publisher group currently employs 18 people, according to recent financial records, and used a significant portion of its cash reserves over the preceding year.
Addressing London Local News Deserts
The planned intervention addresses a wider crisis in the capital’s media landscape, where a population of approximately nine million people is served by heavily depleted newsrooms. Over the past two decades, traditional print outlets have faced severe contraction, highlighted by the Evening Standard ending its daily newspaper publication in 2024 and shifting to a weekly format named the London Standard.
Previous attempts to run daily free newspapers in London also faced swift closures. Rupert Murdoch’s News International launched The London Paper in 2009 before shutting it down after three years, while the Daily Mail’s London Lite ceased publication during the same year. Meanwhile, the national freesheet Metro has undergone major structural adjustments to secure its own financial sustainability.
Alternative Models and Independent Subscriptions
In place of large corporate dailies, smaller subscription-based outlets have emerged to cover the capital. Jim Waterson, founder of the London Centric news site, noted that the Camden New Journal group had previously resisted the industry-wide push to chase clicks at the expense of quality journalism.
Waterson noted that while subscription ventures offer back-to-basics reporting, they often remain small operations run from kitchen tables. He observed that Vince recognizes London as one of the country’s worst local news deserts, where securing sustainable funding for audience growth remains a primary hurdle.
Future Structure and Editorial Approach
Under the evolving proposals, the Westminster edition may be renamed to reflect a broader regional audience, potentially adopting designations for north, south, east, and Westminster distribution. Vince intends to remain largely a hands-off investor, though he indicated he would consider contributing occasional comment pieces.
He previously founded an online publication named Babelfish. Regarding his alignment with the Camden group, Vince noted that the existing staff share his overarching worldview, ensuring a smooth transition as the rescue package moves toward finalisation.
