Dalia Stasevska Ends Lahti Symphony Tenure with Verdi’s Requiem

After four years, Dalia Stasevska’s tenure as chief conductor of the Lahti Symphony has come to an end. Her leadership concluded with two farewell concerts featuring Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem. Stasevska, who is Ukrainian-born, faced challenges including the pandemic and the war in Ukraine during her time with the orchestra.
Stasevska aimed to infuse the program with contemporary music and introduce new talent. “This has been a very breeding time for me, because this is my first chief of the conductor,” Stasevska said. “We have been really great and we have expanded the software terribly to the new music side.”
Stasevska praised the Lahti Symphony for its exceptionally light sound, which allowed for a more versatile repertoire. She also noted the personal growth she experienced. “I feel that I have grown up as a leader this season, which means leading such a big organization,” Stasevska said. “The orchestra has also taught me moderation.”
In addition to her work with the Lahti Symphony, Dalia Stasevska has maintained an international career, serving as a principal guest conductor with the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2019. She has also conducted orchestras in Sweden, Norway, France, and the United states. Stasevska values these long-term relationships, saying, “These longer friendships and pestos are really vital, because it is very important to refine together in this kind of music.”
Balancing her career and personal life is a priority for Stasevska, especially with a young daughter. She aims to reduce her travel schedule after a demanding period that included a five-week tour in the U.S.
Looking ahead, Stasevska is considering various options for her career. “I just signed an extension agreement with the BBC and there are many different options on the table to look at,” she said. “I would like to find a new long -term pest, so let’s see what’s going on.”
Stasevska has also used her platform to advocate for Ukraine, her country of birth. She and her brothers have worked to raise funds and awareness. Stasevska’s brother works as a correspondent in Ukraine.She was also among the first Finnish artists to condemn Russia’s war and address Russian-composed music.
“If I have such publicity and the opportunity to speak, it must be used wisely,” Stasevska said. “There are currently terribly dangerous forces in the world that are trying to upset democracy and cause instability.”
