The departure of Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025 continues to be a defining and painful point of transition for the Dallas franchise. More than a year after the transaction, the organization is struggling to recover from the loss of the star guard, who had spent more than six years with the team.

The trade, described as one of the most shocking in NBA history, has left the Mavericks in a position where they are now among the league’s top rebuilding projects. This decline follows a period of significant success, as the team had been the Western Conference representative in the NBA Finals in 2024.

Motivations and Execution of the Trade

Reports indicate that the Dallas Mavericks were motivated to move Doncic due to ongoing concerns regarding his conditioning. The franchise appeared to have reservations about granting him a five-year supermax extension worth $345.3 million, for which he would have become eligible in the 2025 offseason.

The execution of the trade has been criticized by league executives. Because the Mavericks negotiated exclusively with the Lakers and kept the talks clandestine, they failed to create a bidding war that could have resulted in the largest haul of assets in NBA history. The Mavericks were unable to secure both of the Lakers’ tradable first-round picks.

Impact on the Mavericks Roster

The trade brought Anthony Davis to Dallas, but his tenure has been marred by health issues. Davis has suffered four major injuries since the trade occurred. As of January 10, 2026, Davis was reported to be out for at least a month, further complicating the Mavericks’ efforts to stabilize the franchise.

The organizational fallout extended to the front office. General manager Nico Harrison became the target of Fire Nico chants from fans at the American Airlines Center. These pressures culminated in the firing of Harrison on November 11, 2025.

Doncic’s Transition to Los Angeles

For Doncic, the transition to the Los Angeles Lakers involved a period of adaptation. Two months after the trade, it was noted that he was still adjusting to his new environment. However, he delivered a high-profile performance during his first return to Dallas on April 9, 2025.

During that game, Doncic was visibly emotional, moved to tears by a tribute video played at the American Airlines Center. Despite the emotional weight of the return, he led the Lakers to a 112-97 victory over the Mavericks, recording 45 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and four steals.

He’s teary-eyed still as we walk out on the court for the tip ball. To have the emotional resolve to then go put on that kind of performance, it’s superhuman.

Current Relationship with Dallas

Despite his current role with the Lakers, Doncic has maintained a strong emotional tie to his former city. On November 14, 2025, following a Lakers loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Doncic spoke about his connection to the Metroplex.

The city of Dallas, the fans, the players, they’ll always have a special place in my heart. I thought I was going to stay there forever, but I didn’t. So that will always be a special place for me. I will always call it home.

Luka Doncic

While Doncic stated that his current focus remains solely on the Los Angeles Lakers, he acknowledged that a part of him will always remain in Dallas. This sentiment has left many fans hoping for an eventual return of the player who once averaged a league-high 33.9 points, 9.8 assists, and 9.2 rebounds per game during the 2023-24 season.
