Dame Laura Kenny, Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, has been appointed president of Commonwealth Games England (CGE). At 32, Kenny is the youngest person to hold the position, succeeding Dame Kelly Holmes and Dame denise Lewis.
Kenny’s athletic achievements include five Olympic gold medals and one silver,along with seven world titles and 14 European golds. She participated in three Commonwealth Games, securing gold at Glasgow in 2014, and a gold and bronze at Birmingham in 2022. She retired from cycling in March 2024.
Commonwealth Games England expects Kenny to serve as a key ambassador leading up to the Glasgow Games in 2026. CGE Chair John Steele said Kenny will play a vital role in safeguarding the Commonwealth movement’s future. Glasgow is set to host a scaled-down version of the event after Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to escalating costs.
Kenny expressed her enthusiasm for the role. “I love the unique feel of the event and I’m thrilled to work with and support England’s athletes as they prepare for glasgow and future commonwealth Youth Games to,” Kenny said. “I have devoted my life to cycling and while that sport will always be my passion, it is indeed great to have the opportunity to pass on some of my experience to athletes from a wider range of sports.”
“Her passion for the Games is clear and her insights will be invaluable. she is one of our nation’s greatest athletes and that experience at the very highest level of sport will inspire the next generation of Team England and assist the CGE in supporting them,” Steele said.
