INDIANAPOLIS — Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard has suffered a torn left achilles tendon,the team announced Monday,confirming fears after an MRI exam. The injury will keep him out for the remainder of the first-round playoff series against the Indiana Pacers.
The severity of the injury also casts doubt on Lillard’s availability for the 2025-2026 season. The Bucks are currently trailing the Pacers 3-1 in their best-of-seven series.
The injury occurred during Sunday’s 129-103 loss to the Pacers. Game 5 is scheduled for Tuesday evening in Indianapolis.
Bucks coach Doc Rivers acknowledged the difficulty of the situation. “It’s hard, honestly,” Rivers saeid. “A blood clot, followed by that. It’s really hard. This is why he is surrounded by his teammates and his family.” He added,”He’s a great guy in terms of basketball yes,but especially as a teammate,as a father and all that.”
This season, lillard averaged 24.9 points and 7.1 assists per game, ranking him among the NBA’s top performers. He was also selected as an All-Star for the ninth time in his career.
The incident occurred in the first quarter of Sunday’s game. Lillard, 34, was positioned behind the three-point line when he received the ball. After a move to evade Gary Trent, Lillard collapsed, clutching his left leg.
Teammates assisted Lillard off the court and to the locker room, as he was unable to put weight on his injured leg.
“it is very tough so when it stays on the ground, it hurts to see that,” said Pat connaughton, who previously played alongside Lillard with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Lillard had recently returned to the lineup after missing 14 regular-season games due to a deep venous thrombosis, an abnormal blood clot that restricts blood flow to the heart.
He sat out Game 1 of the series against the Pacers before returning for Game 2.
