In an interview published by TVLine on Thursday, television creator Dan Goor discussed his upcoming NBC comedy series Sunset P.I., arguing that while the new procedural shares creative DNA with his previous hit Brooklyn Nine-Nine, its central relationship and character dynamics establish a distinct world.
Sunset P.I. Co-Creator Dan Goor Outlines Distinct World and Mature Romance for New NBC Series
Sunset P.I. received a 10-episode order from NBC and is scheduled to air Mondays starting in February, following the completion of the second season of The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, TVLine reported. The show was co-created by Goor and fellow Brooklyn Nine-Nine veteran Luke Del Tredici. The series stars Jake Johnson, Jane Levy, and Keith David.
Goor stated that the procedural framework mirrors Brooklyn Nine-Nine by using case-solving elements to drive plot and stakes. That structure allows writers to avoid constantly escalating interpersonal conflict between workplace characters.
One thing we really liked about the structure of a show like Brooklyn was that we were able to do traditional sitcom and workplace stories, but the case-solving procedural elements meant that plot could be driven by something other than the crazy interactions between the people.

Romance Dynamics Separate Mickey and Faye From Prior Comedy Couples
While Brooklyn Nine-Nine focused its emotional core on Jake and Holt and the ensemble as a whole, Sunset P.I. centers primarily on the dynamic between Jake Johnson’s character, Mickey, and Jane Levy’s character, Faye, alongside the supporting ensemble, according to the interview.
Goor noted that unlike typical will-they-won’t-they television tropes such as Jim and Pam, Mickey and Faye begin the series in a more mature relationship.
It’s a more mature relationship right off the bat, so it’s not a Jim-and-Pam sort of will-they-won’t-they. It’s a different type of will-they-won’t-they that’s a fun thing to play.

Crossovers and Shared Universe Possibilities Remain Off the Table
When asked whether Sunset P.I. and Brooklyn Nine-Nine could exist in the same television universe, Goor ruled out a shared continuity, TVLine reported. He noted that Jake Johnson previously portrayed Nick on New Girl and appeared on Brooklyn Nine-Nine during a New Girl crossover, making a crossover framework impossible.
Despite ruling out a shared universe, Goor confirmed that the production intends to cast alumni from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, and the broader comedy community during the first season.
