The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team has advanced to the NCAA Division I national championship game for the seventh time in program history following a victory over Illinois in the national semifinals on April 4, 2026.
UConn defeated Illinois with a final score of 72-61 (also reported as 71-62) at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The victory marks the fifth consecutive Final Four win for the Huskies and secures Dan Hurley’s third national championship appearance in the past four seasons.
A Modern Tournament Standard
The win reinforces Dan Hurley’s position as one of the most successful postseason coaches in the modern era of college basketball. Hurley currently holds an all-time NCAA Tournament record of 20-5, resulting in a .800 winning percentage.
This winning percentage is the second-highest in history, trailing only John Wooden’s record at UCLA. Hurley’s postseason efficiency surpasses that of other legendary coaches including Mike Krzyzewski, Roy Williams, and Billy Donovan.
Recent statistics highlight UConn’s dominance under Hurley’s leadership. The team has posted an 18-1 record over its last 19 NCAA Tournament games. The only loss in that span occurred against Florida, the eventual champion of that year, in a game decided by two points.
Hurley has not experienced a loss in the Sweet 16 or later stages of the tournament, maintaining an 11-0 record from that point forward. Since 2023, UConn has trailed for only 13 minutes and 39 seconds across 200 minutes of play in national semifinals and title games.
Building a Dynasty
UConn’s status as a powerhouse was solidified with its fifth NCAA crown during a dominant run in 2023. Hurley followed that success by leading the Huskies to a second consecutive national championship in 2024 in Phoenix.
With the 2026 appearance, Hurley is positioned to achieve a feat not accomplished by the aforementioned legends of the game: winning three national championships within a four-year span.
The program’s history in the final game of the season is remarkably strong. UConn is 6-0 in previous national title game appearances, having never lost on the final night of the season.
Coaching Pedigree and Career Path
Dan Hurley’s coaching success follows a trajectory that began in high school and mid-major college athletics. He previously served as the head coach at Wagner College from 2010 to 2012 and at the University of Rhode Island from 2012 to 2018.

During his tenure at Rhode Island, he led the team to an A-10 tournament title in 2017 and an A-10 regular season title in 2018, the latter of which earned him A-10 Coach of the Year honors.
Hurley’s background is rooted in a basketball family. He is the son of Hall of Fame high school coach Bob Hurley Sr. And brother to Bobby Hurley, a former Duke guard and former head coach at Arizona State.
Since taking over at UConn in 2018, Hurley has earned several prestigious accolades, including the 2024 Naismith Coach of the Year, the 2024 Sporting News National Coach of the Year, and the 2024 Big East Coach of the Year.
Looking Ahead to the Final
UConn is scheduled to compete for the national title on Monday, April 6, 2026. The Huskies will face the Michigan Wolverines, who advanced to the final after defeating Arizona.
Hurley’s current overall head coaching record stands at 350-179, with his record at Connecticut specifically listed as 199-74.
