Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has addressed the addition of former Nebraska Cornhuskers quarterback Dylan Raiola to the program, emphasizing a developmental strategy for high-profile quarterbacks in the current college football landscape.

Speaking on The Pat McAfee Show, Lanning discussed the decision to bring Raiola to Eugene, Oregon, and how the move fits into the team’s approach to managing talented athletes who may not immediately start.

A Pattern of Quarterback Development

Lanning noted that in the current era of college football, the prevalence of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) offers and the accessibility of the transfer portal make it increasingly rare for highly touted athletes to remain on the bench behind established starters.

The Oregon program is attempting to challenge this trend by implementing a specific formula for quarterback development. Lanning pointed to the experience of UCLA transfer Dante Moore as a precedent for this approach.

Prior to the 2024-2025 offseason, Moore joined the Ducks and accepted a role behind then Oklahoma transfer Dillon Gabriel. This arrangement allowed Moore to develop his skills and learn from Gabriel with the objective of becoming the starter in the following season.

According to Lanning, Raiola recognized this developmental path when deciding to transfer to Oregon.

I think when you first get to a program you talk about a vision and the things you hope to accomplish. Once you’re in a program it’s now like proof is in the pudding and you know, Dante [Moore] went through a very similar experience here with the opportunity to learn from Dillon Gabriel. Lanning described Raiola as a player with extreme talent and ability and mentioned that the Oregon coaching staff had recruited him during his time in high school.

The coach stated that Raiola’s decision to join the team was influenced by the visible success the program has achieved, leading the quarterback to conclude that Oregon was the ideal location for his career.

The quarterback room at Oregon has seen significant movement and decision-making regarding professional prospects. Dante Moore recently made the decision to return to the Ducks rather than entering the 2026 NFL Draft, where he was presumed to be a first-round pick.
