Dan Tana,Hollywood Restaurateur,Dies at 90
West Hollywood,CA – Dan Tana, the beloved owner of the iconic Los Angeles restaurant Dan Tana’s,has died at the age of 90 on august 16th. For over six decades, his restaurant served as a haven for Hollywood’s elite, known for its warm atmosphere and legendary chicken parmesan.
Tana opened his eponymous Italian restaurant in 1964, taking over the former Dominick’s location on Santa Monica Boulevard. Before becoming a restaurateur, Tana pursued an acting career after playing professional soccer in Canada. He worked at other Los Angeles restaurants, Miceli’s and La Scala, while honing his acting skills.
Business initially struggled, but a glowing 1966 review in the Los Angeles times declaring it the “best new Italian restaurant in the city” quickly changed its fortunes. The restaurant’s popularity soared in the 1970s,fueled by its proximity to the Troubadour music venue. Artists like Elton John and the Eagles – who reportedly drew inspiration for thier hit “lyin’ Eyes” from nights at Dan Tana’s – became frequent patrons.
Dan Tana’s became known for its unpretentious atmosphere and comforting red-sauce cuisine, attracting a loyal clientele of stars including Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Frank Sinatra, and Jack.
“He didn’t make it as an actor, but he certainly got to hang out with them,” remarked Alison Martino, a longtime friend and manager of the restaurant’s Facebook page, to The Hollywood Reporter.
