PP Seeks Victim Inclusion in Valencian DANA investigation
Updated May 26, 2025
The Popular Party (PP) plans too propose that victim associations be invited to participate in the Investigation Commission regarding the DANA (isolated high-level depression) event at the Valencian Parliament. The move comes after concerns that these groups were previously excluded from the process.
The commission’s board is scheduled to meet Monday to discuss incorporating new appeals. According to the PP, their aim is to ensure that all victim associations wishing to participate can do so, respecting their preferences for involvement. The PP wants to avoid “closed” lists that could be seen as exclusive.
The table will also assess the documentation received and distribute it to the four parliamentary groups. This step ensures all parties have access to the necessary facts for the investigation into the DANA event and its aftermath.
The Investigation Commission approved a work plan proposed by the PP and Vox on May 5, despite opposition from PSPV and Compromís, who considered it a “mockery” for not including President Carlos Mazón. The plan includes summoning 85 people, including government officials and experts, to testify.
Those slated to appear before the commission include President of the Government Pedro Sánchez, Carlos Mazón, several ministers, former officials, and 17 mayors from municipalities affected by the DANA. Representatives from the Civil Guard, National Police, Military Emergency Unit (UME), and meteorological experts are also expected to participate in the DANA investigation.
The commission established a 20-day period for submitting requested information and documentation. It also allows for additional requests or adjustments based on the progress of the investigation into the causes and consequences of the DANA event.
Associations Want to Appear
Following a phone call between the President of the Generalitat and representatives from various victim associations, spokespersons emphasized the importance of their inclusion in the commission. They argued that excluding them from the parliamentary body contradicts the desire to engage with them.
The associations have stated they will await Monday’s decision regarding the list of participants. They have voiced criticism over what they perceive as a veto on their participation in the commission investigating the devastating DANA event that caused meaningful damage and loss of life.
what’s next
The commission will continue its work, reviewing documentation and hearing from various stakeholders, as it seeks to understand the causes and consequences of the DANA event and identify areas for enhancement in disaster preparedness and response.
