Dancing, a beloved pastime for many, may offer more than just enjoyment. Emerging research suggests a link between dance and cognitive health, particularly in older adults experiencing early signs of cognitive decline. A study conducted by researchers at Kyoto University, published in November 2025 in Innovation in Aging, explored the effects of dance training on brain activity and hormone levels in individuals with subjective cognitive decline (SCD).

Understanding Cognitive Decline and SCD

Cognitive decline refers to a reduction in brain function, potentially impacting memory, language and concentration. It exists on a spectrum, ranging from normal age-related changes to more serious conditions like mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia. The study focused on SCD, a condition characterized by self-reported memory problems or increased confusion that aren’t necessarily confirmed by standard cognitive testing. As Masatoshi Yamashita, lead author of the study, explains, early intervention is crucial in potentially preventing the progression to dementia, making SCD a vital area of research.

The Kyoto University Study: Design and Participants

Researchers recruited 53 participants aged 65 to 84 who were experiencing SCD. Before beginning the intervention, participants underwent comprehensive cognitive assessments and brain imaging to establish a baseline. Crucially, the researchers also measured levels of oxytocin, a hormone often associated with social bonding and well-being, hypothesizing that any cognitive benefits derived from dance would likely be accompanied by improved mood and social connection.

Participants were then divided into two groups. One group participated in twelve weeks of dance training, while the other continued with their usual routines. The dance training involved learning choreographed routines set to popular music, including both pop songs and traditional Japanese melodies.

Key Findings: Oxytocin and Brain Activity

The results revealed a significant increase in oxytocin levels in the dance training group. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) showed increased functional connectivity within the brain and greater spontaneous brain activation at rest in the same group. Functional connectivity refers to how different brain regions communicate with each other, and increased activation suggests enhanced brain function.

While the study did not find a statistically significant improvement in cognitive test scores, the authors suggest this may be due to the relatively high scores participants already achieved on initial cognitive assessments. “Other factors that may explain the lack of significant results include cognitive load, intensity or duration of dance classes,” notes Kaoru Sekiyama, the team leader, emphasizing the need for further investigation into these variables.

The Role of Oxytocin and Social Interaction

The increase in oxytocin observed in the dance group is particularly noteworthy. Oxytocin is known to play a role in social bonding, stress reduction, and emotional regulation. The researchers suggest that the social interaction inherent in dance classes may be a key factor in boosting oxytocin levels, contributing to overall well-being. This aligns with growing evidence suggesting that social engagement is a protective factor against cognitive decline.

Dance as a Potential Intervention: What Does the Research Say?

This study builds upon previous research indicating that dance can improve cognitive function in individuals with MCI. However, this is one of the first studies to specifically examine the effects of dance on brain activity and oxytocin levels in those with SCD, a potentially earlier stage of cognitive change. A February 2026 report from Medical Xpress highlighted the findings, noting the potential of dance to promote brain health. National Geographic also recently reported on the powerful benefits of dancing, even suggesting it can be more effective than antidepressants in some cases.

Limitations and Future Research

It’s important to acknowledge the limitations of this study. The lack of significant improvement in cognitive test scores warrants further investigation. Future research should explore different dance styles, varying intensities and durations of training, and larger sample sizes. Researchers also need to investigate the optimal timing of intervention – whether dance is most effective when initiated at the earliest stages of SCD or later in the progression of cognitive decline.

Despite these limitations, the findings offer encouraging evidence that dance may be a valuable, accessible, and enjoyable intervention for promoting brain health and well-being in older adults. The study underscores the importance of considering holistic approaches to cognitive health, incorporating not only cognitive training but also physical activity, social engagement, and emotional well-being.
