Lost footage from a 2011 surf trip to Salina Cruz, Mexico, featuring Dane Reynolds, has resurfaced, offering a glimpse into a pivotal moment in his career. the trip, which included surfing icons Mick Fanning and Shane Dorian, occured while Reynolds was recovering from a high ankle sprain.
Before Paul Fisher’s rise to global DJ fame, he joined Reynolds and other pros on the Reef-sponsored trip. The resulting film, Lost Interest, became a cult classic, solidifying Reynolds’ status in surfing lore. The new footage showcases Reynolds’ powerful and fast surfing style, even while recovering from injury.
The release of this unseen footage coincides with a Chapter 11 project focusing on an old Channel Islands board model, the MTF Altered Twin, once ridden by Rob Machado.Reynolds revived the board during the Mexico trip and beyond.
Jimmy Wilson, the trip’s photographer, noted Reynolds’ exceptional surfing despite his injury. Fanning humorously added that Reynolds’ skill was overwhelming to witness.
