Updated May 26, 2025
Fans anticipating D’Angelo’s performance at the annual Roots Picnic in Philadelphia will have to wait. The R&B artist has pulled out of the festival, scheduled for May 31-June 1,citing a longer-than-expected recovery from surgery. Maxwell will take his place at the Mann Center in Philadelphia.
D’Angelo shared his disappointment on Instagram, explaining that medical specialists advised against performing due to potential complications. He expressed regret at missing the chance to play with The Roots and connect with his fans.
“Due to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery I had earlier this year, I’ve been advised by my team of specialist[s] that the performance this weekend could further complicate matters,” D’Angelo wrote. “It is indeed nearly impossible to express how disappointed I am not to be able to play with my brothers the Roots. And even more disappointed not to see all of you.”
He also thanked his fans for their continued support, adding, “I’m currently in the lab and I can’t wait to serve up what’s in the pot.” This news impacts the Roots Picnic, a popular music festival, but organizers are confident Maxwell will deliver a memorable performance.
D’angelo has a long history with The Roots, particularly drummer Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, who encouraged him to release the album Black Messiah in 2014 after a nearly 15-year break. his limited appearances since then include a 2021 Verzuz show at the Apollo Theater and a 2022 cameo at the Hollywood Bowl.
raphael Saadiq said last September that D’Angelo was working on new music. Besides “I Want You Forever,” his collaboration with Jay-Z for The Book of Clarence soundtrack, no new material has been released.
The Roots Picnic will still feature performances by Lenny Kravitz, meek Mill, GloRilla, Miguel, Tems, kaytranada, jeezy, Pusha T, 2 Chainz, Musiq Soulchild, Backyard Band featuring CeeLo Green, and Crystal Waters.
What’s next
Maxwell’s addition ensures the Roots Picnic will continue as planned. Fans can anticipate his performance, while awaiting D’Angelo’s return to the stage after his recovery.
