Dani McGifford, 30, traded the track for the pitch, now representing St Helens in rugby league. The former heptathlete,who trained alongside world-class athletes,found the mental pressures of elite athletics challenging. Now, McGifford is channeling her athletic prowess into rugby, playing for her hometown team.
McGifford credits the 2021 World Cup (played in 2022) as her inspiration. After discussions with St Helens coach craig Richards, she decided to pursue the sport. McGifford started in Saints’ Challenge Cup semi-final and now hopes to play in the Wembley final against Wigan.
McGifford emphasizes the support she receives from her teammates. She said the prospect to play at Wembley is special.
“I watched the 2021 World Cup [deferred to 2022] and that is kind of what inspired me most to take it up,” McGifford said.
