Daniel Craig Reflects on Bond Fame, Spielberg Collaboration, and new Film ‘Queer’
London, England – Daniel Craig, the British actor best known for his portrayal of James Bond, opened up about the highs and lows of his illustrious career during a recent conversation at the BFI in London. While expressing his love for playing the iconic spy, Craig candidly admitted that the intense fame that came with the role was “emotionally arduous” for both him and his family.
“I did. I loved every second of it,” Craig said when asked about his time as 007. “I mean, some of it was tough and weird and strange and emotionally kind of difficult for everybody, including my family. The fame is weird.”
Before stepping into Bond’s shoes, Craig had already established himself as a talented actor with roles in films like Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” (2005), “Lara Croft: tomb Raider” (2001), and Sam Mendes’ “Road to Perdition” (2002). However, Bond catapulted him to a whole new level of recognition.Craig recalled a time when he could enjoy a degree of anonymity, saying, “I was working and had a little bit of fame and it bought me, you know, a drink at the bar. But I could still go anywhere.”
He acknowledged that the potential for overwhelming fame couldn’t deter him from taking on the iconic role.
The conversation also touched upon Craig’s experience working with legendary director Steven Spielberg on “Munich.” He described the experience as “terrifying,” highlighting Spielberg’s unique directing style.
“I think, rather brilliantly,he doesn’t give you an awful lot,” Craig explained. “He arrives the day before shooting and he leaves the night of. It’s something from ‘Jaws,’ I think it’s some tradition he had. So you don’t see him.”
Craig vividly remembered the first scene filmed for “Munich,” a complex tracking shot in a car. He recalled the pressure of performing under Spielberg’s watchful eye, saying, “It was like, ‘I’ve arrived, OK?’ And you’re just like, ‘Oh my God!’”
Currently, Craig is generating buzz for his performance in Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer,” which recently earned him a Golden Globe nomination for best performance by a male actor in a motion picture, drama.
“I try and be cool about it but I can’t, it’s amazing,” Craig said of the nomination.
Looking ahead, Craig will reprise his role as Detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson’s third “Knives Out” film, “Wake Up Dead Man.” He expressed his enthusiasm for the franchise, stating, “If Johnson keeps writing them like that, then yes, I will play it,” adding that it’s “much easier on the limbs” than portraying Bond.
“Queer” is currently playing in U.S. theaters via A24 and will be released in the U.K. on December 13th via Mubi.
