Daniel Jones Signs With Minnesota Vikings: A New Chapter After Giants Exit
Daniel Jones Signs with Minnesota Vikings
Former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has signed with the Minnesota Vikings. This decision comes after Jones became a free agent on Monday following a mutual agreement to part ways with New York.
Jones will join the Vikings on a one-year deal worth $375,000. He will start on the practice squad, but he may sign with another team if a starting quarterback is injured in the next three weeks. He will be a free agent again after this season.
The Vikings currently have only one quarterback under contract for the 2025 season, rookie J.J. McCarthy. McCarthy suffered a knee injury and has undergone surgery. His recovery is on schedule.
As McCarthy recovers, veteran Sam Darnold has stepped up as the starting quarterback. Darnold has led the Vikings to a 9-2 record this season, setting a personal best for touchdown passes.
In the immediate term, Jones is likely to back up Darnold and Nick Mullens. This move allows the Vikings to assess pairing Jones with McCarthy in the future.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell has expressed admiration for Jones. O’Connell scouted him during the 2019 draft process. He stated that he respects Jones and hopes he finds a good opportunity moving forward.
Jones had a significant playoff performance against the Vikings in January 2023, throwing for 301 yards and rushing for 78 yards. He had a successful six-year stint with the Giants, concluding with 70 touchdown passes and 47 interceptions. New York announced the decision to part ways with Jones, noting it was in the best interest of both parties.
