‘Sucker Punch’ Inspired Monique Touko’s Directing Role

For Monique Touko, theater has always been a family affair. Her mother instilled a love for the arts, fostering a bond through shared experiences. A pivotal moment arrived when, at 16, Touko saw Roy Williams’s ‘Sucker Punch’ at the Royal Court. The play, exploring masculinity, community, and the exploitation of black bodies through the lens of boxing, left an indelible mark.
The 2010 Sacha Wares production immersed the audience in a 360-degree experience. Touko recalls the visceral impact of the boxing ring’s authenticity and the actors’ raw energy. “We were fully in it – as if you could ultimately step into the characters’ roles if you just walked a couple of meters,” she said. “It felt very real. I came away feeling, I need to understand how this is made.”
The performance also marked touko’s first encounter with daniel Kaluuya. An interaction after the show further solidified the experience. Kaluuya noted the significance of having black audience members, stating, “I acted better for you.”
Touko, a former Stagecoach student, initially considered a career in law. Though, witnessing the director’s role in shaping the vision of a production sparked a new ambition. Years later, she enrolled in the Young Vic’s directing course, led by none other than Sacha Wares.touko approached Wares, expressing her admiration for ‘Sucker Punch’ and seeking guidance.
