Norwegian Musician Daniel Kvammen Survives Dramatic Bus Incident Amid Strong Winds in Finnmark

Norwegian musician Daniel Kvammen and his touring crew experienced a harrowing start to their Finnmark tour early Thursday morning when their bus was caught in unexpectedly strong winds on the way to Honningsvåg. The incident, which Kvammen described as "a bit dramatic," left the group shaken but grateful for a fortunate outcome.

The tour, organized with Scene Nord, began with a concert in Alta on Wednesday. Shortly after, the group set off by bus toward Honningsvåg. Despite weather forecasts predicting winds of 19 to 20 meters per second, the gusts reached up to 30 meters per second, catching the travelers off guard.

“The wind grabbed the bus, and it was slippery too,” Kvammen recounted. The bus was forced off the road, leaving the group stranded until help arrived from passersby. Remarkably, spirits remained high among the passengers.

“People kept their humor. I think everyone was just happy to have survived,” Kvammen said.

The same stretch of road saw another bus veer off around the same time. Robert Drotninghaug, managing director of Arctic Sea Hotels & Apartments, explained that the weather forecast had been inaccurate, leading to the dangerous conditions. “We analyze wind speeds carefully before deciding whether to drive. Last night, the forecast was completely wrong,” he said.

Kvammen praised the bus driver, Per Aslak Luuso, for his quick thinking and skillful handling of the situation. Luuso, who owns his own bus company, had adjusted the departure time by 12 hours to avoid the worst of the weather. However, the wind gusts proved too strong.

“There was no chance of keeping the bus on the road,” Luuso said. “A quick decision had to be made to avoid the bus tipping over.”

Luuso emphasized the importance of respecting weather conditions. “You have to respect the road and the wind. It’s crucial,” he said.

Despite the ordeal, Kvammen remains optimistic about the rest of the tour, which includes stops in Kjøllefjord and Kirkenes. “Now we’ve proven we can overcome any challenge. It’s going to be fantastic,” he said.

The incident has even inspired Kvammen to consider writing a new song. “This is great material for a tune. I need help with a title, though, so people should send in suggestions,” he joked.

Meanwhile, meteorologists have issued a yellow warning for strong wind gusts in Nord-Troms and Finnmark, with speeds expected to reach 27 to 33 meters per second along the coast. Waves could reach up to 12 meters in some areas, prompting warnings for residents and travelers to exercise caution.

As Kvammen and his team prepare for their next performances, the dramatic start to their tour has already become a story of resilience and camaraderie—one they’ll likely remember for years to come.
