Daniel Wiffen Clarifies Viral Rumor: Not the Man in Balaclava at Kneecap Gig
Daniel Wiffen Addresses Viral Video Misunderstanding
Irish hip-hop group Kneecap is enjoying success during their UK tour. Recently, a controversy arose when a tall man wearing a shirt with the Proclamation of the Irish Republic appeared on stage during a concert in Bristol. This man wore what appeared to be an Olympic medal and a balaclava, leading some audience members to believe he was Olympic swimmer Daniel Wiffen.
The video of this incident gained popularity on TikTok, with the crowd chanting Wiffen’s name. The man on stage shouted “Up the Ra,” prompting applause from the audience.
On Friday, Wiffen posted a statement on Instagram clarifying that he was not the person in the video. He wrote:
“Hi all. There is currently a video trending on social media claiming to be me in attendance at a Kneecap concert in Bristol (UK). In the video, it claims to be me invited on stage wearing a balaclava/facemask and then participating in a rap song. For clarification, this was not me on stage and I was not in attendance at the concert. Stay safe, Daniel.”
Wiffen, originally from Leeds, moved to Co. Armagh as a child. He made history as the first male swimmer to win an Olympic medal for Ireland, winning gold and bronze at the Paris Olympics last summer.
Kneecap continues to capture attention, recently performing with musicians Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher in London.
