The ATP Tour has fined former world number one Daniil Medvedev 6,000 euros (approximately $7,000) for unsportsmanlike conduct following a series of racket-smashing incidents during the Monte Carlo Masters.

The disciplinary action follows a match on April 8, 2026, in which Medvedev suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Italy’s Matteo Berrettini. The result marked the first double-bagel loss of Medvedev’s career.

Details of the On-Court Incident

The outburst occurred early in the second set of the match. After hitting a forehand into the net to fall behind 2-0 in that set, the 30-year-old Russian slammed his racket near the baseline.

According to reporting from ESPN and Fox News, Medvedev then threw the racket toward a tarp at the end of the court. He proceeded to pick up the frame and repeatedly smash it until the equipment was destroyed enough to fit through an opening in a courtside trash can.

The chair umpire issued a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct during the sequence, which took place while the crowd sarcastically cheered the player’s actions.

Match Performance and Outcome

The match was characterized by total dominance from Matteo Berrettini, who did not drop a single game throughout the contest. The match concluded in just 49 minutes.

Match Performance and Outcome

Following the victory, Berrettini, a 2021 Wimbledon finalist, described the win as one of the best performances of my life and noted that such a decisive victory does not happen often.

Despite the loss and the subsequent fine, Medvedev had earned 45,520 euros (approximately $50,000) in prize money from the tournament, having entered the event with a first-round bye.

Disciplinary Context and Ranking

Medvedev, currently ranked 10th in the world, has a history of on-court outbursts. The ATP Tour’s current fine is significantly lower than penalties he received during the previous year.

Comparative penalties from the previous year include:

  • $76,000 for outbursts at the Australian Open.
  • $42,500 for outbursts at the US Open.

The announcement of the $7,000 fine was made by the ATP Tour on Monday, April 13, 2026.
