Danny DeVito Reminisces About Michelle Pfeiffer in ‘Batman Returns’
Updated June 03, 2025
During a conversation with Colin Farrell for Variety, Danny DeVito shared his memories of filming Batman Returns with Michelle Pfeiffer. DeVito, who played the Penguin, Oswald Cobblepot, alongside Pfeiffer’s Catwoman, Selina Kyle, in Tim Burton’s 1992 film, called Pfeiffer a “goddess.” The actors compared notes on playing the iconic Batman villain.
DeVito told Farrell,”I had Michelle Pfeiffer. I’m not comparing anything, but I’m just saying, she was a goddess. If I knew she was going to be in a scene that day…” he added that he would get “all flushed” and ask for extra makeup when he knew he’d be working with her. He admitted to lusting after her.
Farrell inquired about the nature of this “lust.” DeVito clarified that it was Oswald who felt the attraction. He added, “I kind of feel like she liked it. She liked Oswald.” In Batman Returns, Oswald’s advances were rejected by Selina. However, DeVito explored a romantic connection between the two characters in a 2021 short story for the Gotham City Villains anthology. The Penguin’s complex relationship with Catwoman remains a fan favorite topic.
DeVito said he enjoyed working on the film and with Burton. He said the idea of Oswald was fun to play. He initially hesitated about doing the comic, but the fact that he’s always been a big fan of Michelle Pfeiffer’s,and the Penguin obviously lusts after Catwoman, made him decide to put those two together. He also thought it would be good if Penguin had a little bit of Robin Hood in him.
Farrell currently stars as Oswald in the Max series, The Penguin, a spin-off from Matt Reeves’ film, The Batman. The series, created by Lauren LeFranc, picks up a week after the movie’s events, following the Penguin’s rise to power in gotham’s underworld.
