UN Aid Convoy Attacked Amid Sudan Famine Threat
Updated June 03,2025
An attack on a United Nations aid convoy in Sudan has raised concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis. The convoy, carrying vital food supplies, was headed to El fasher, the capital of North Darfur, a city threatened by famine.
The UN confirmed that several trucks from its food and children’s agencies were targeted near Al koma, approximately 45 miles from El Fasher. The area is controlled by the paramilitary rapid Support Forces (RSF), who have besieged El Fasher for over a year.
The attack comes as the UN refugee agency reports that more than 4 million people have fled Sudan as the start of the civil war. The agency warned that this mass displacement is destabilizing the region and the world.
A UNICEF spokesperson confirmed the attack on the World Food Program (WFP) and UNICEF trucks, stating they were awaiting approval to proceed to El Fasher. the location, Al koma, was also the site of a recent airstrike on a civilian market that reportedly killed at least 89 people.
Last week, the WFP expressed shock after its facilities in El Fasher were repeatedly shelled by the RSF. El Fasher, home to about 2 million people, including 800,000 displaced from across Darfur,is the only state capital in the Darfur region not under RSF control.
The city has been enduring daily shelling, and food supplies are dwindling, leading the UN to warn of potential Sudan famine.Activists report that essential food and medicine are disappearing from markets due to the RSF siege.
We used to have goods coming in regularly through vehicles, but now the only goods that enter the city come on donkeys. Even these people carrying limited supplies on their donkeys get questioned and interrogated at RSF [checkpoints].

The ongoing civil war has created the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. In addition to the 4 million refugees, a record 11.6 million people are displaced within Sudan, with about half located in the darfur region. both the Sudanese army and the RSF face accusations of war crimes and using starvation as a weapon.
What’s next
The international community is urged to increase pressure on all parties to allow safe and unfettered access for humanitarian aid to prevent further suffering and potential Sudan famine in El Fasher and across Sudan.
