Daring Desert Rescue: Senegalese Navy Saves 183 Migrants Stranded in the Sahara
The Senegalese National Navy announced that it rescued 183 irregular migration candidates off the coast of the Saloum Delta in the west of the country.
The Senegalese Navy, on its social media sites, said the operation took place off Jivre (west), not far from the boat’s starting point in the Saloum Delta.
This operation brings the number of migrants rescued within ten days to 582 people.
Senegal is classified as one of the main exit points for irregular migrants, who follow the Atlantic route to reach Europe by boat.
The European Union recently announced the provision of aid worth 30 million euros to combat irregular migration from Senegal.
