Kazuo Meitu: A Legendary Japanese Cartoonist Passes Away
Kazuo Meitu, a renowned Japanese cartoonist, has left an indelible mark on the world of horror comics. His passing on the 28th of last month at the age of 88 has sent shockwaves through the manga community.
Meitu’s journey as a cartoonist began at the tender age of 18, when he collaborated with Takeko Mizutani on the comic “Brothers and Sisters of the Forest”. He went on to create numerous iconic works, including “The Drifting Classroom” and “The Left Hand of God, the Right Hand of the Devil”, which have been widely acclaimed for their thought-provoking themes and masterful storytelling.
Meitu’s works have not only been limited to the realm of comics. Many of his creations have been adapted into animated series and films, such as “Cat-Eyed Monk” and “Baptism”. In 2014, he made his directorial debut with the autobiographical horror film “Mother”, which starred Kataoka Ainosuke as Meitu himself. His contributions to the world of manga have been recognized with numerous awards, including the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Award Special Prize in 2023.
While Meitu is best known for his horror comics, his works often explored the complexities of human nature, exposing the darker aspects of human behavior. His influence can be seen in the works of many subsequent horror comic authors, including Junji Ito. Despite stopping his comic writing career in 1995 due to health issues, Meitu remained active in the entertainment scene, showcasing his vibrant personality and signature red and white stripes.
