AMC Networks has officially renewed the crime drama series Dark Winds for a fifth season. The announcement was made on February 5, 2026, approximately 10 days before the premiere of the fourth season, signaling an early greenlight for the production.
The network has confirmed that Season 5 will premiere in 2027. While an exact calendar date has not yet been announced, the upcoming season will consist of eight hour-long episodes, maintaining the structure used in the third and fourth seasons.
Production and Creative Direction
Filming for the fifth season is already underway in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The production continues to utilize the region as a training ground for Native artists, a point emphasized by showrunner John Wirth.

For four seasons now, AMC Networks has provided us with the opportunity to entertain audiences through the unique lens of a traditional crime story set on the Navajo Nation in 1972. We are one of one and never take this strong support for granted.
John Wirth
Zahn McClarnon, who stars as Joe Leaphorn, is returning to the series in a dual capacity. In addition to his acting role, McClarnon is directing the second episode of the fifth season.
Plot Developments and Season 4 Conclusion
The narrative for Season 5 will build directly upon the events of the Season 4 finale, titled Ni’ Hodisxǫs (The Glittering World)
, which aired on April 5, 2026. In that episode, Joe Leaphorn was kidnapped by Irene Vaggan, who attempted to force him and Billie into a fantasy. Although Joe eventually defeated and arrested her, the finale ended on a cliffhanger with the murder of Gordo Sena.
The fifth season will center on the investigation into the murder of Gordo Sena. Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee and Bernadette will collaborate to solve the case. Showrunner John Wirth has indicated that the character of Gordo will still have a significant role in the upcoming season despite the character’s death.
Other character arcs remaining from the Season 4 finale include Joe Leaphorn’s considerations regarding retirement from his Tribal Police position and the emotional distance created between Joe and Emma after she shared plans to return to Los Angeles.
Cast and New Additions
AMC confirmed the return of lead actors Zahn McClarnon as Joe Leaphorn and Martin Sensmeier as Terry Bai in March 2026. The series is also adding new recurring cast members, including Noel Fisher, who will portray Michael Jorie, and Devin Sampson-Craig, who will play Daniel Ironwater, Jr.
