Darragh Kenny, an Offaly native, showcased exceptional horsemanship at Spruce Meadows in Canada, securing first place in the Recon Metal Cup 1.55m show jumping event Thursday night. Kenny and his mount, Eddy Blue, navigated the Olaf Petersen Jr.-designed course with precision, clocking the fastest clear jump-off round in 40.07 seconds.
The Irish contingent continued their strong showing, with david O’Brien and El Balou Old taking second place, finishing their jump-off clear in 40.15 seconds. Conor Swail, riding My Lady Lavista, secured third, completing the course in 40.23 seconds.The top three spots were separated by less than two-tenths of a second, highlighting the competition’s intensity.
This show jumping victory marks a important achievement for Kenny, adding to his already remarkable record. The Recon Metal Cup win underscores the strength of Irish riders in international equestrian competitions.
“It was a great class,” Kenny said. ”Very fast jump off. I absolutely love jumping in this ring. The footing is incredible. You know, it’s always been a lucky ring for me, actually, I’ve always had good success in it.”
Kenny also expressed confidence in his horse, Eddy Blue, despite a previous setback. “And, my horse was brilliant. He’s in super form at the moment. He had a really uncharacteristic result in the Grand Prix last week,but,he bounced back and jumps super today,and I expect a good result on Saturday,” Kenny said.
