Amazon has increased its total planned investment in Mississippi data centers to $25 billion, according to a company announcement on April 9, 2026. The expansion is expected to create 2,000 high-skilled jobs across the state’s data center operations.

The updated investment plan includes an additional $11 billion for Madison County and a $1 billion investment in Hinds County. In Hinds County, Amazon is converting the former Delphi manufacturing plant into a data center facility. This follows a previously planned $3 billion investment in Warren County and the establishment of the company’s first data center campus in Madison County, which was the largest capital investment in the state’s history at the time of its groundbreaking.

Infrastructure and Environmental Commitments

As part of the expansion, Amazon is allocating $300 million toward grid improvements and investing in carbon-free energy. The company has also committed to transitioning its Canton campus to 100% recycled wastewater for cooling purposes by 2027.

The company stated that its data centers provide cloud computing infrastructure for essential services, including healthcare systems, agricultural innovations to reduce water usage, and large-scale research capabilities.

Economic and Workforce Development

The economic impact is already evident in Madison County, where more than 75 Mississippi companies are involved in construction and operations. These companies employ thousands of operational staff, electricians, and construction workers.

Economic and Workforce Development

To prepare the local workforce for these roles, Mississippi has aligned its economic development with a specific workforce strategy. This includes a partnership with AccelerateMS and the AWS Information Infrastructure Pre-Apprenticeship program. These initiatives provide training in high-demand technical fields, including:

  • Fiber optics
  • Data center operations
  • Electrical systems
  • Power infrastructure

The state has also deployed a mobile training lab to increase hands-on access to technical instruction for Mississippians.

Mississippi’s Emerging Data Center Hub

Amazon’s investment is part of a broader trend of Mississippi positioning itself as a national hub for machine learning and cloud computing. Other significant investments in the state include:

  • xAI: $20 billion investment in DeSoto County.
  • Compass Datacenters: $10 billion investment in Lauderdale County.
  • AVAIO Digital: $6 billion investment in Rankin County.

Subsidies and Local Opposition

Despite the capital influx, some projects have faced criticism over the use of public subsidies. On December 29, 2025, the Center for Economic Accountability named the Compass Datacenters project in Meridian, Mississippi, as the nation’s Worst Economic Development Deal of the Year for 2025.

The center cited a decade-long subsidy package provided by the Mississippi Development Authority, which exempts the Texas-based firm from state corporate income, franchise, and sale and use taxes. Critics argued that these tax breaks were excessive relative to the project’s local economic impact and potential effects on regional energy affordability.

Local concerns have also emerged regarding the environmental and governance aspects of data center growth. In Brandon, a petition requesting more guarantees from local officials regarding a data center project gathered over 1,000 signatures by December 4, 2025, reflecting tension between economic growth and environmental concerns.
