Dateability: The Innovative Dating App for Disabled Singles Launches in the UK
Dateability: A Dating App for the Disabled
Dateability is a dating app created for disabled and chronically ill individuals. Launched in the U.S. two years ago, it has now become available in the U.K. due to demand.
The app was founded by Jacqueline and Alexa Child, two sisters from Colorado. Jacqueline, who identifies as disabled, co-leads the organization. Dateability includes features that cater specifically to disabled users. One such feature, “Deets,” lets users describe their disabilities in general terms like “wheelchair user” without detailing specific medical conditions.
Currently, 25,000 users in North America use Dateability. This number may seem small compared to mainstream apps like Tinder and Bumble but is significant considering the limited resources of the founders.
Challenges in Funding
Jacqueline Child has faced obstacles in securing funding for Dateability. Despite her experience with chronic health conditions since age 14, she notes that investors often overlook the unique challenges disabled individuals encounter in online dating. The app aims to change this narrative by catering to a specific community.
Finding financial backing has proven difficult. All funding has come from angel investors, grants, and other sources rather than traditional venture capital. Jacqueline believes this reflects a misunderstanding of the disability dating market.
A Unique Community
While some disabled individuals may not seek partners within the disability community, many do value the understanding that comes from sharing similar experiences. The disability community is large, comprising about 20% of the global population, and often lacks devoted dating platforms.
Modern dating apps can be unwelcoming. Many disabled users struggle with how to disclose their disabilities and face potential rejection. Dateability encourages transparency from the beginning, allowing users to be themselves without fear of judgment.
Empowering Users
Jacqueline explains that users with visible disabilities often feel pressured to hide their condition on mainstream platforms. Dateability allows them to present their true selves confidently. For instance, one user, Sophie Brisker, found success on Dateability after experiencing rejection on other apps. She believes starting with mutual understanding is crucial for meaningful connections.
The sisters aspire to expand Dateability throughout Europe and other English-speaking regions. They hope that increased exposure will lead to necessary investments, allowing for more effective marketing strategies.
Dateability stands at the forefront of addressing the needs of disabled singles. By providing a safe and understanding space for dating, it aims to ensure that disabled individuals can connect and share their lives openly.
