Geographic and Regional Context

San Angelo is located in the Concho Valley, a region of West Texas. We see positioned between the Permian Basin to the northwest, the Chihuahuan Desert to the southwest, the Osage Plains to the northeast, and Central Texas to the southeast.

The city serves as the county seat of Tom Green County. According to the 2020 United States Census, San Angelo had a population of 99,893. The San Angelo metropolitan area, for which the city is the principal center, had a population of 100,159.

San Angelo is home to several significant institutions, including Angelo State University and Goodfellow Air Force Base. The city also preserves its history through Fort Concho.

Transportation and Trade Infrastructure

The city is a key component of the Ports-to-Plains Trade Corridor, which was designated by Congress as a High Priority Corridor in 1998. This corridor is designed to provide efficient transportation for people and goods traveling from Mexico through West Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, and eventually into Canada and the Pacific Northwest.

The corridor encompasses several highway sections, including I-20, I-27, I-35, US 83, US 87, US 277, US 287, SH 158, and SH 349. A feasibility study conducted by the Texas Department of Transportation, which concluded on October 15, 2020, examined the costs and logistics of creating a continuous four-lane divided highway that meets interstate standards, including potential extensions to I-27.

Historically, San Angelo served as a critical rail junction. It was the site of a crossing between the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe Railway and the Kansas City, Mexico & Orient Railroad. The former Kansas City, Mexico & Orient tracks extended southwest toward Fort Stockton and Alpine, where they connected with the Union Pacific Sunset Route, while other lines connected to the northeast toward Coleman.
