Updated June 10, 2025
Romeo powered to victory in Stage 3 of the Dauphine, overcoming what he described as one of the most difficult days of his career. The under-23 time trial champion’s triumph puts him in the overall lead by 17 seconds.
Romeo acknowledged the difficulty of getting into the breakaway, admitting he wasn’t feeling his best. He strategically waited until the last moment, relying on his instincts for flat finishes within small breaks. He knew that if given a few seconds, he could capitalize.
The stage win was a long-term goal for Romeo, who said he had been focused on it for a month. He credited altitude training in Sierra Nevada with his team for preparing him for the challenge. The team’s support gave him the chance to compete for the win.
Tadej pogacar, the reigning Tour de France and Giro d’Italia champion, sits just over a minute behind in ninth place. Pogacar will look to close the gap as the eight-stage race heads into the mountains on friday.
“I don’t believe it,” Romeo said. ”It was one of the toughest days of my life so far… I had this stage on my mind for a month.”
What’s next
With a 17-second lead, Romeo faces a time trial and then the mountains as he seeks to maintain his position in the Dauphine. Pogacar will be looking to close the gap.
