Updated June 12, 2025
Jake Stewart of Great Britain seized his first World Tour victory with a powerful sprint finish in Stage 5 of the Criterium du Dauphine. The Israel-Premier Tech rider outpaced Jonathan Milan in Macon after the 183km stage.
Stewart launched his sprint early, gaining an advantage over Milan of Lidl-Trek. Despite Milan’s powerful surge,Stewart’s well-timed effort secured the win, aided by a tailwind on the final stretch.
Race leader Remco Evenepoel of Belgium was involved in a crash near the finish line, sustaining damage to his jersey. Though, the Soudal-rapid Step rider remains in the overall lead due to a rule that neutralizes times within the final 5km of a stage.
“That feels good,” Stewart said. He also noted the unfortunate crash of his teammate, Pascal Ackermann, earlier in the stage. “The team and the boys backed me and I’m so happy I could finish it off for them.”
The Criterium du Dauphine, a traditional lead-up event to the Tour de France, continues with challenging mountain stages in the French Alps. Stage 6 features a 126.7km race to Combloux, while Stage 7 promises intense action with multiple steep climbs to Valmeinier.
