Davao City,Philippines – Davao City is set to launch its Interim Bus Service this October,a significant step towards alleviating the city’s worsening traffic congestion. The announcement was made by Lawyer Tristan dwight Domingo, acting city administrator and project manager for the Davao City Bus Project, signaling a proactive approach to improving public transportation.
A Timely Intervention for Peak Hour Commutes
The initiative, driven by a directive from Acting Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” duterte, aims to deploy 10 new buses to operate during peak hours. Domingo expressed optimism about the timeline, stating,”Maybe by late September or October, those 10 buses will finally be operational.” The buses are anticipated to arrive in the city by August or September, with drivers undergoing Tesda certification and familiarization with the new units.
Strategic Operation During Peak Demand
The decision to limit the interim bus service to peak hours is a strategic one, based on applications submitted to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).This approach is designed to align with current passenger demand, which studies indicate is highest during these periods, with Public Utility jeepneys (PUJs) being the primary mode of transport.
Furthermore, operating exclusively during peak hours is intended to foster a collaborative environment and avoid direct competition with existing PUJ drivers, ensuring a smoother transition for all stakeholders.
Complementary Services for Enhanced Commuter Support
In addition to the new interim bus service, the existing Peak Hours Augmentation Bus Service (PHABS) will continue its operations. Domingo confirmed that both services will run concurrently, providing a more robust support system for commuters navigating the city during busy periods. This dual approach is expected to offer significant relief to the daily commute of Dabawenyos.
A City-Led Initiative for Immediate Impact
Domingo emphasized that the interim bus service is a city-led effort, designed to provide immediate support while the larger Davao Bus Project progresses. The procurement of these 10 modern buses is a testament to the city government’s commitment to enhancing the daily commute, particularly during rush hours.
While acknowledging the interim service’s role in decongesting roads during peak times, Domingo clarified that it is not a definitive solution to the city’s long-term traffic challenges.
The Road Ahead: The Full-Scale Davao Bus Project
the ultimate goal of substantially improving public transport and traffic flow lies with the full-scale Davao Bus Project. This ambitious undertaking involves the procurement of approximately 1,000 buses intended to replace the current PUJ fleet.
As a precursor to this larger project, the city government finalized a ceremonial contract signing on April 21 with AutoKID Truck Solutions for the acquisition of 10 Yutong ZK6126HG buses. These low-floor city buses, part of the DC Bus Interim Service, are equipped with modern amenities and can accommodate around 40 seated passengers, with additional standing room, promising a more comfortable and efficient travel experience for residents.
The introduction of the interim bus service marks a crucial phase in Davao City’s journey towards a modernized and efficient public transportation system, setting the stage for the transformative impact of the full-scale Davao Bus Project.
